What is the difference between a cosmetic dentist and a regular dentist?
There are many differences between a cosmetic dentist and a regular dentist. A cosmetic dentist primarily focuses on the appearance of teeth and gums. Cosmetic dentists also have the ability to perform certain procedures that dentists perform as well. Cosmetic dentists are not as focused on the health of the teeth or gums, but more on their appearance.
Looking more into the appearance of the teeth, they mainly focus on if the teeth are stained or discolored, misaligned, chipped, gapped, or if they are broken. A cosmetic dentist is able to work with you and help straighten and keep your teeth as white as possible.
A regular dentist is primarily focused on the health of the teeth and gums. Dentists are tasked with making sure that a person is keeping their teeth and gums healthy. Dentists help prevent and treat cavities, gingivitis, or other mouth-related concerns. A dentist goes to dental school for four to five years. A cosmetic dentist goes to school for four years to obtain an undergraduate degree, followed by another four years in dental school, and then additional years in an institution that specializes in the cosmetic industry.

Do you need cosmetic dentistry?
Visiting a cosmetic dentist is a completely personal choice. Most people just visit a regular dentist, but there is no harm in seeking attention from a cosmetic dentist. A cosmetic dentist can be necessary if you are looking for help to improve the look of your smile and gums. Cosmetic dentists can perform procedures like implants, veneers, teeth whitening, and more. They can also place dental crowns over a damaged decayed tooth in order to prevent further damage or breaking. Cosmetic dentists can also perform root canals, dental bridges, and enamel fillings. A common procedure that cosmetic dentists perform is called Inlays and Onlays. These are known as indirect fillings. This is used when a tooth is so decayed that it can no longer support a normal filling. An Inlay is when the material is bonded on the center of the tooth. An outlay is when a filling is covering one or more parts of the tooth that may cover the entirety of the tooth.

Why is it important to have a family dentist?
It is extremely important to have a family dentist that you visit regularly. A dentist is meant to help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Visiting a dentist regularly can help prevent any medical conditions from happening. Another reason why it is important to have a family dentist is because having dirty teeth can cause other medical conditions. Poor teeth hygiene can be a link to cardiovascular problems, as the mouth directly leads down into the heart. This can cause a bacterial infection to enter the bloodstream and affect the functions of the heart valves.
It is also important to have your teeth checked by a dentist so that there is a track record of your teeth’s overall health. Not having this can cause severe gum disease, tooth decay, loss of teeth, and the complete loss of enamel. Not having a regular dentist to keep your teeth healthy can cause a lot of medical problems, and to avoid them, it is highly recommended to visit a dentist.

How often should I visit the dentist?
Visiting a dentist depends on the state of your current teeth and gum health. The usual timeline to visit a dentist is around every 6 months. Some dentists recommend yearly checkups, but it all depends on the state of your dental health. For people who are known to have morbidity in their dental health, the timeline on when to visit a dentist then changes. People with morbidities in their dental health are recommended to visit a dentist every three to four months.
Some people may require visiting the dentist even more frequently, but it all depends on what diagnosis you have received, and what the dentist is doing to help treat your condition.
To learn more about dentists versus cosmetic dentists and the importance of both, reach out to Prabhdeep K. Gill Cosmetic Dentist Dentistry. Our dental office offers both types of dental assistance, including different procedures and checkups. We are here to help you with your needs and provide a place for you to feel and look your best.

Dental implants in Fresno
If you are missing one or more teeth, then you may be considering your options for a replacement, including dental implants. Dental implants are a great option for missing teeth as they look, feel, and act almost identical to your natural teeth. Dental implants use a titanium post in place of a tooth’s root that an oral health professional, such as a dentist, periodontist, or oral surgeon like Dr. Gill, inserts surgically into your jawbone below the gums. Once the implant post is inserted and has adequately healed, the new artificial tooth can be mounted onto it. The titanium post will fuse to your jawbone and become securely anchored, providing stability for your new tooth and ensuring the implanted tooth will function and perform the same as your natural teeth while you eat and speak. Dental Crown and Bridges
A dental crown is a cap placed over an individual’s damaged or decaying tooth to improve the look of the tooth. Your dentist can also place a crown on top of an existing dental implant to replace a missing tooth. A bridge is a dental restoration option used exclusively to replace missing teeth. It is a device used by a dentist comprised of two crowns – one on either end – and a bridge of false teeth that rest in the gums to replace a missing tooth. Read more about dental crowns and bridges.
Invisalign Braces in Fresno
Invisalign is a widely used form of orthodontic treatment that enables patients to achieve a straighter, more beautiful smile without the distraction of traditional metal braces. The clear aligner trays are easy to put in and take out, making it easier for patients to eat and clean their teeth, while also being more comfortable than traditional braces. Invisalign trays are custom-made from a clear, medical grade, and BPA-free plastic, which is non-toxic. Invisalign aligners have a similar look to that of whitening trays but are clear so as to be nearly invisible to other people. Patients who have mild to moderate alignment needs can be the ideal candidates for this course of treatment. Additional alignment concerns such as overbites, crossbites or underbites can potentially all be addressed with Invisalign. A dentist trained and experienced with Invisalign, such as Dr. Gill can determine if the patient is a good candidate for Invisalign treatment. Read more about Invisalign braces.
